Livingstone Countertops Review

Hi! I'm in the midst of a DIY kitchen remodel thanks to my dad's carpentry experience and some used kitchen cabinets that I found for a good price on facebook that had enough pieces to work with my kitchen layout. The cabinets just got put in and are awaiting final touches, but I haven't gotten very far with everything else. I'm trying to prioritize counters before floors since my kitchen layout has changed a bit so my existing laminate doesn't quite cover everything. I don't need my kitchen to look like it is straight out of a magazine since this is a relatively modest suburb, but I want it to stand up well to time.

So far I am really leaning towards solid surface for its repairability and durability. I spoke with a counter shop today, and while he likes solid surface he was quick to recommend that I don't use what was my top choice- Corian Rain Cloud. The main reason I like rain cloud is that it has warm grays in it and that it doesn't have busy swirling movement like Corian's Limestone Prima does.

He said that he recommends that for showers and large island tops since you get to see the veining, but that for peripheral countertops I would be paying more for that specific pattern just to see a lot of white without the veining since that wouldn't make it in the cut. I don't care about veining, but I definitely don't want to just be looking at 40 square feet of white with occasional gray. Another concern he brought up is that I wouldn't be happy with the counter edge since this design would have an odd stacked effect. I'm assuming that he had a good reason for not suggesting a V groove edge for this design. Also stated that the corner seam would look odd.

He is sending over a pamphlet with information on dupont quartz that he has a good deal on, but I'm slightly apprehensive about going that route since I don't want to somehow chip my counter and have to live with that before I feel like its been an appropriate amount of time to pony up more cash to redo them.

I ordered two samples that appealed to me from LivingStone since I see that Joseph Corlett recommends that (if I chant his name will he be summoned? :D), but I'm still waiting on those. Does anyone have experience with Living Stone thunder cloud? It says that it is comparable to corian rain cloud, so I'm hoping that there is more gray throughout it its width so that I'm not looking at just white if I go that route. I can't find very many pictures of it online in decent lighting to be able to tell.

Otherwise I'm looking at Wilsonart. I believe that the pattern carries through the entire counter better than Corian does, so I am assuming that a possible stacked edge effect wouldn't be as much of a problem with this brand? They seem to have quite a good selection of light warm grays (quiet swirl, cloud mist, gray lace, etc). Is there any reason not to go with Wilsonart?

Here are some samples that I borrowed from my local Home Depot- rain cloud is on the far right and has the most contrast as far as color goes. If you are ever considering ordering samples from Home Depot please look at the actual brand's site first because HD will rip you off. For instance HD charges $12 for a 2x2 sample, corian charges $2 for that size and $12 for a 10x10 sample.

The rest of my kitchen that is in the works (there will be cabinet doors in the corner, need to put a piece of filler there first). Cabinets are SW Pure White which doesn't seem to play well with cool whites, so I'm trying to avoid counters where that is prevalent.

Thanks for any input :)
